It's Pouring

It's pouring and not many clients came in today. I only had 3 tickets, this is so hard to believe, but considering the weather. I can see why. I'm not a fan of slow Saturdays;  especially if they follow a slow Friday.

But it was a close to another journey. Today I was extremely happy to see someone achieve their goal of clocking the 1500 hours! I'm grateful to have shared a few short months with her, she has been a very lovely personality. She's always pleasant and boost such a beautiful smile.

Congratulations to Shaniece.

The florescent lighting is not a friend of my camera phone.

Happy Weekend to all of my fellow students.

I will be attending the Bronner Brothers Hair Show.

Friday...Service Day

OK this Friday was Service Day again!

Providing you were not late, did not miss a day the prior week & have all of your work done (grade point average), you can receive a FREE service.

Services can include a Hair Cut, Hair Style, Nail Polish, Hair Color and so on. It's a time when other students will have the opportunity & honor of working on their fellow students. We usually find someone of our choosing to do our service. It's fun and gives students communicate and share ideas.
This week I was surprised that JamesD asked me to cut his hair. I have done men's cuts before but what was unusual about his cut was he wears a Mohawk! I have not done this type of cut before, but it can't be that bad or can it?  Besides our school does not get too many request for this style. Perhaps, some marketing or advertising at local high schools can be done?

So... James sports a Mohawk that has blonde running down the hawk. His requested cut will eliminate the blonde in the hair and take him back to his original hair color. The blonde streak is all I have known since I started school. So this will be a change. And after instructions from him I plugged the clippers in and this is what the finished cut looked like. And no hair cut was necessary. I have learned that when cutting this style you have to go back and forth on the sides in order to get all of the stray hairs. I used a number 2 guard on the sides and a number 6 on the top. I edged the hairline and beard. The next day he shaved off the mustache.  Personally, I like the change in his style.

It was a fun cut and I'm looking forward to plugging in the clippers for another Mohawk.

Exhausted.......

I can't even begin to say how exhausted I am after school today! Yes, it has been one of those days.
A steady flow of clients. Not too surprising, we are always busy on Thursday. 1/2 prices for senior citizens.

My day began with a traffic jam and ended the same way; having a client that ran late in the day.
I did one of my favorite things a curler set with clients Velcro rollers, they are so easy to work with and your set will come out just fine. This client did not want any Setting Lotion but all went well.

I did Re-Touch Relaxer, client provided the kit by Olive Oil Relaxer by Organic

This is the first time  I  used this product. I was easy to use and the mix was not complicated. It contained everything for the relaxer plus the mousse wrap lotion and conditioning hair moisturizer. Since she only needed a retouch, there was plenty of product left over. The mousse wrap lotion worked well for the roller set. Since she was also getting a tint the hair was a tad bit after the color was applied. But once I applied the conditioner cream & started with the mousse the hair became easier to manage. The roller set looked great.

The rest of my tickets were:   a pedicure, another roller set, hair cut, & blow dry flat iron.

I did find out that if you have a client that has bad dandruff, or extra dry scalp (flaking) you can use baking soda mixed in with the shampoo to help this problem. In my travels to the shampoo bowl, I've seen this; mostly seniors. I was busy and not to say the least exhausted.

Yay! Carolyn has reached her 1000 hours. Happy for her & looking forward to my 1000 hour milestone. Now she has to get ready for the written exam.  In the state of Texas you can take the written exam once you have reached 1000 hours. TDLR for more information.
Once passed you no longer have to attend Theory Class!

Jeopardy Game

We did a Jeopardy Game in Theory Class. Two teams and it was done the same way as the on TV version. Instead, all of our questions were related to the currently chapter we are studying.

Salon Ecology.

This was the first time it has been done, at least since I've been there. It was fun and I hope that we can do more games like this. Sad to say my team lost.  I will always remember the question we lost on.

Our test will be this Friday, a good way to study and have a bit of competition at the same time.

Using Styling Cream

I used the styling cream I got from the contest. It's heavy consistency but works well. Takes long time to blow dry & roller set. Not many complaints for free stuff. Counting down on required hairstyles.

Astrological Theme Contest

On Saturday, we had a "competition".  The theme was astrological, in honor of the passing of Neil Armstrong and the 3rd quarter contest. Not many students entered the contest which also included Nail Art & Mannequin hairstyling. Styles where to be anything themed outer space or anything related to space in general.

Those who tackled the competition:

All mannequins were due by 9am on Saturday, good way to get everyone on time to school.
I think more advertisement could have been done in order to get more student participation.
Posters or flyer's posted around the school. I really wanted to see dolls by those who did not participate.

My doll was from the theme of Star Trek.  My style incorporated several styling techniques. Besides she works on the "Enterprise". I did have a personal favorite, the Galaxy of Planets doll.

Customers were asked to vote for their favorite doll. After several ties a selection finally made the cut. There was a 1st & 2nd place and everyone else receive something for participation. Only one student entered in the Nail competition. Perhaps, because we only have 2 nail techs in training now.
Me myself not too skilled in the nail area. I can do a good manicure. ;)

The winners are:

1st Place Moon Doll (Taylor)
2nd Place Astronaut Doll (Anna)

And the Nail Art winner, the only entry was Nails by Apple!  She did such a great job.

I'm looking forward to the next quarterly contest. My personal job to spread the word!
Let's get the excitement going. (I'm thinking of hair designs now.)

Always open to ideas and or comments!

Bonner Bros

I have all of the brochures and printed material for the up coming Bronner Bros. Hair Show!

Yes I'm going, & can't wait. This one offers so many FREE classes, it's crazy. I'm grateful to have secured a student ticket. This all takes place the last weekend of Sept. 30 - Oct. 2nd in Arlington TX at the Arlington Convention Center.

More on this later................

If you are undecided about going, rethink and go the brochure is packed with classes and did I mention it's free. There is also a student showcase for display "wearable" hairstyling on your mannequin.

Shear Selection is Important

Instead of theory class, we had a presentation.! A representative from Icon Shears gave us an educational class on shears. (Spencer)
We also had the opportunity to purchase them at an discounted price.

The representative was entertaining as well as giving us lots of info on shears, how to select them, what to look for, how to select your correct size and what questions to ask when you are going to purchase shears.

Before you purchase a new set of shears be sure to ask the following questions or look for these things when checking out the display case:

Where does the stainless steal come from? (best is from Japan or Germany)

Are these shears 420c or 440c? (number determines how often you will have to sharpen) The "c" stands for Carbon.

If you are left or right handed, do you know how to determine the which is which? Remember that the "screw" needs to be facing you when working. (So be sure to pay attention of the display)

To check if your shears need sharpening: Run your thumbnail across the blade, gliding it across the blade.

420c will need to be sharpened once every six months!
440c will need to be sharpened once a year!
YOUR SHEARS MUST BE SHARP, PERIOD!
No shears have the ability to sharpen themselves.

Dull blades on shears can cause snagging of the hair, bending/folding, they will also cause the hair to bunch when cutting. Proper care is so important.

Other interesting things to note the names of the shears parts: Pinkie Tang. Finger Ring, Bumper, Tension Ring & of course the Blades.

Important to remember:  The tension needs to be checked after each service!  I had no idea.
Close - Open - Drop
Oil Shears once a week @ the pivot point, do not let oil run down your blades.
Wipe the pivot point, not your blades.

To select your proper size of shears remember size does matter!
5.5 to 6 are for most people
Tip should not extend over your middle finger.

Also I did not KNOW there are SPECIALITY SHEARS.  I have lots to think about now. Next time I attend a Hair Show or decide to purchase shears, I will use these guidelines.

These are a few of the pictures that I took of the shears, 3 rings, slanted finger ring shears, & shears that swivel!  A technique I want to learn.

"The Stylist makes the Shears, the Shears does not make the Stylist"

Astrological Contest

It's this Saturday.....time is ticking away! I've been searching on line images of futuristic hair styles. We can do hair, nails & makeup. Looks like one of my mannequin's will get a new makeover. ;)

Gel Nails

Did my first gel nails yesterday. It's not too difficult. The steps are on the OPI instruction sheet. This is not the polish in a bottle w/brush. Our school uses the jar dip the brush(paint on).

I need to gel more practice doing the sculpts & gel nails. Yuck. Not a "doing nail set fan" ;(

I did not know there are things in beauty school, I won't like. *sigh*
