Starting to work on the small number of requirements. I did 2 make up's today.
I'd like to have a doll specifically just for make up.

It's "Back to School" Saturday o_O

It was more than challenging navigating all of the clients in the lobby.
The "back to school" crowd arrived early. Lots of eager customers waiting for services. Stations were ready to rock 'n style; cosmetology students waiting to be assigned tickets.
But all went well or did it? I survived another busy Saturday.

With camera in tow, I managed to take a few pics after all of the services.
I like to thank my fellow students, friends & instructors who posed for pics
willingly & unknowing. If you are on Facebook, I will post more there.

Liddie's Great cut!

Liddie hair was originally in a long blunt cut. It was recently cut & styled by Carlos!
She look marvelous, such a great cut.  Carlos told me he did a basic 180 degree on her, Shampoo, Cut, & Style.

Both are students at Metroplex Beauty School.

Assigned to the Dispensary

I had an opportunity to get more practice in on braiding and get closer to the required amount of hair styles.  I was assigned to work in the Dispensary today. (It's making sure all supplies are stocked, laundering of towels/rags...issuing supplies to students.)
In between my duties, I worked on my doll and two loaners from friends.
Thanks for sharing! I find it rather fun, work on a different doll.
Perhaps, we all should consider switching from time to time??????
Open for comments.

For a Friday, quite a few clients again today. Wow.

Friday is the day for student services; providing you have excellent attendance the previous week.

Most impressive service today: Liddie's hair. Carlos rocked the cut & style.
I could scream, I did not take a pic! Perhaps she will pose for me next week.

This is the last weekend before school begins, I bet there will be lots of Blow Dry's/Flat Iron's tomorrow. Cuts might be popular.

Ready or not, we will rock & roll on styles tomorrow.

I will survive. I will survive.

Braiding

From time to time there will be special post on topics related to Cosmetology. The following links are for those who want to know more information on braiding. If you decide to braid; it can add another dimension to your client's style. It's also another option to add interest to a hairstyle.
Remember that you can also reference YouTube for more videos on hair braiding techniques.

If you want even more; there is a Hair Braiding license that can be obtained. It is offered at the
Dallas Barber & Stylist College. I'm sure there are other places but this is the one I found online, first.

We don't have special classes for braiding instruction at school, in our textbook no chapter just for braiding, but brief explanation on weaving & hair extensions.

If you want more info on braiding videos on braiding:  Hairfinder

First Day on the Floor

So I walk in and I'm a ball of nerves! (Heart beating fast)

The day begins with attending theory class for an hour then you are on the floor!
Class is more in depth; the workbook needs to be completed with the corresponding chapter.
At the end of each chapter, we test & turn in workbook for final grade.
If you apply yourself  it's not too bad. I came in on Hair Coloring, Chapter 13.

On to the floor & setting up your station:

You are assigned to a station in the center isle, in order for the floor instructor to have quick access to you & your needs.
And to keeep an watchful eye on you.

My first day was enjoyable, I survived and realized; I like this. I don't think anyone could see me shaking~~~~~

Roller Sets are still my favorite and will remain so. Only draw back is rolling hair that is too short even for the blue rollers. What a drag. If all else fails just roll what you can and thermal curl the rest once your client has completed drying time.

Time flys when you are on the floor compared to the classroom pre 200 hours.

How it all began.....

I started Beauty School in May 2012.  I enrolled and hoped for the best. Not  knowing what to expect, I felt the journey to gain my training would be fun & interesting. I was excited, it was a new beginning in my life's journey.

I have "some" at home experience of doing friends & family members hair. I've relaxed, use hair color, pressed, braided and done basic styles. I had no previous experience in barbering! I tried to cut my son's hair, upon making the decision I was not professional, and his cut was horrible....to the barber shop he went. ;)

My decision to go to Cosmetology School was based on my age and the time it would take me to complete the course. I currently attend Metroplex Beauty School in Mesquite, TX.
I should complete the course in 10 months, I have a year to complete.
(Full Time Tuesday - Saturday 9am - 5:30pm) If you attend on a part time basis it will take you a year & six months to complete. *All this depends upon your attendance.
I'm doing the Cosmetology Course; requires 1500 hours to graduate. Upon completion of your hours; if you want your license you must take the State Board test, written & practical.
There is a fee for the test. Dallas students are no longer required to go to Austin, TX to take the test. There is a location for testing in the City of Dallas.

Upon enrollment, I was taken on a tour of the school. My selection was based on the price of the school and recommendation from a friend. I was told: "It's best to learn to do all types of hair". Basically, African American, Latino & Cacsusian. I wanted to be prepared to work with all types of hair and thought it's the best way to go.

200 Hours: Advance to the Floor!

Once you have 200 hours, you are graded out of class and placed on the "floor".
This process begins once you are going to clock 200 hours. Grading out is being able to roll a perm, being able to do your cuts (90, 45, 0), relaxing and everything you have covered in the classroom period of your training. Proper Draping of customers. Maintaining a good grade point average helps. After everything is a go, and you get the all clear, you get your REAL kit!

And yes, your textbooks! FINALLY (3 books, regular text, workbook & study guide.)
The text books are clear & concise....I still think it would be better if students received the textbooks BEFORE going to the floor.  Actually reading would have helped more than the tedious note taking. I did ask if it was possible to receive my books but received an answer
as why it was done this way. ;(      (I did tons of research on YOU Tube)

My kit contained:  OPI Nail kit, 2 curling irons large & small, 1 flat iron, 1 blow dryer, brushes, combs, hair cutting kit, clippers/trimmer/comb kit, rollers various sizes, chemical kit with supplies, gloves, stand for doll head, duffel bag items come in, clips for hair various kinds, heat mat, & other misc items. I can't recall.  I will post a picture.  Oh yes, student application for discount card at Sally's Beauty. First Chair magazines, student rate coupon for Modern Salon Magazine.  Modern Salon is a great magazine, will keep your abreast of new trends in the beauty business.

It's so much stuff. I was surprised on how many things were in my kit! Believe it or not you still need to purchase additional items in order for you to do a good job and have a stocked station.  The next move is to get all items organized into containers in order for you to set up your station properly. You can never be too organized when setting up your station. Before going to the floor YOU need to review everything in your kit, make sure you know what you have, what you need and what the best way for you to transport your stuff on a daily basis.
Do your fellow students a huge favor, Have your stuff with you EVERYDAY!
Please & thank you!

This is where you need to have a "friend" at school or either know someone who has made the transition & they are willing to help you with any questions. Make sure if you do have a friend in school; choose someone who has good habits, you want to learn good tips & suggestions. Try to avoid those students who could care less! I asked several students how they went about organization of their station. You can always learn something from someone else who a went through this process before you.

If all else fails; ask the instructor. (They have a wealth of information.) This is something that needs to be reviewed BEFORE you leave the classroom, in order to avoid any mishaps on your part. I purchased a total of 4 containers. One for rollers,  one-four drawer for misc items, clips and so on, one for chemical items, one for combs, brushes, other misc items needed. (Mirror, small flat iron, extra rollers)  We got a duffel bag, but I opted to use a rolling suitcase & another carry along bag.  My nail kit was an additional item for me to carry everyday.

The Internet is your friend, use it wisely and look up as much as you can on the subject of cosmetology. There is so much information out there, things to inspire you to achieve your goals.

Theory & Training Weeks

First Day:  All students are required to wear a black smock (sleeves or sleeveless), shirt (any color, has to have sleeves if you wear a sleeveless smock), black pants & black or white shoes. You are asked to wear makeup, but everyone does not always wear, including me. (Most of the time I try to be beautiful)  Be prepared, you need to wear very comfortable shoes; I had to purchase a better pair of shoes to Nike's Cross trainers! My legs were hurting so bad. Support stockings or socks will help.  You will not be given much of an opportunity to sit, period. You are required to stand up on a continuous basis. (In order to prepare you for the real world in a shop.) It feels like being a boot camp, really!

I learned the proper way to shampoo my doll! You get one mannequin which has long hair (shoulder length). Everyone receives the same doll, there are no options of receiving an ethnic hair doll. (I was disappointed about this.)  Basic loaner kit which has rollers, shears, combs & brushes. You will also have access to the schools flat & curling irons & blow dryers. We did not receive any books for the first 200 hours of school. Instead you are required to take notes in theory class, lots of writing, lots of writing, & more of writing. I don't see the reasoning for this (my opinion), your text books would be MORE helpful. I did alot of research online in order to supplement my notes. They are copied from a slide presentation, Pivot Point. Each week you can expect to be tested on the subject matter that is covered.

We were taught the proper way to shampoo, condition & blow dry doll. This process is repeated over & over again. Then things move on to hairstyling. Basic hair styling procedures, thermal curling, flat ironing, roller sets, & backcombing/ratting.

I purchased a "Miss Jenny" doll from Sally Beauty Supply, cost was $39.99 on sale.  This doll is black and has a better grade of hair. (my opinion) It feels silkier, easier to curl and flat iron. Now the original doll's hair can be flat ironed & curled, but it's just not the same. It feels more straw like. The picture above is my original doll untouched. I post pics my dolls current look after face enhancement & hair cutting.

Hair Styling had to be one of my most fun weeks. I love doing roller sets! Backcombing/Ratting was another fave of mine. Many of the seniors get this done on a weekly basis. Referred to as the "bread & butter".

My first week I came in on Hair Styling! Then you go on to Hair Coloring, Perms & Relaxers, Hair Cutting, Facials & Hair Removal, Mani & Pedi, MakeUp may not be exact order.

Brief summary of weeks my likes & dislikes if any:

Hair Coloring:  learning all the basics on hair color, mixing, principles, working on doll, bleaching, highlights.  It's all good!

Perms & Relaxers: how to section for a perm, rolling perm, types of perms, relaxing do's & don'ts, types of perms & relaxers. I don't like using gel for perms & relaxers, would rather have a natural hair doll to relax. And/or having a real volunteer for both procedures would be wonderful!

Hair Cutting: learning to use shears, razor, 90, 45 & 0 degree hair cuts.  Loads of fun! New respect for those who cut hair on a regular basis. I knew after this week I needed another doll.  My suggestion you might want to get extra dolls if you want to do more practice. EBay!

Facials & Hair Removal (Waxing): I enjoyed facials, & waxing, I had no previous experience in either. Students worked on each other.

Manicure & Pedicure:  Basic procedures in both, good to know. Not one of my favorites, not really into pedicures. My feelings would not be hurt if we had the option of leaving it out.
Since we had to put socks & shoes back on it totally ruined my pedicure.

MakeUp: Basic overview of makeup.  I did not like having someone else to put on my makeup. Might have been more fun to do myself first then someone else, everyone taste is different.
