Instead of
theory class, we had a presentation.! A representative from
Icon Shears gave us an educational class on shears. (Spencer)
We also had the opportunity to purchase them at an discounted price.
The representative was entertaining as well as giving us lots of info on shears, how to select them, what to look for, how to select your correct size and what questions to ask when you are going to purchase shears.
Before you purchase a new set of shears be sure to ask the following questions or look for these things when checking out the display case:
Where does the stainless steal come from?
(best is from Japan or Germany)
Are these shears 420c or 440c?
(number determines how often you will have to sharpen) The "c" stands for Carbon.
If you are left or right handed, do you know how to determine the which is which? Remember that the "screw" needs to be facing you when working.
(So be sure to pay attention of the display)
To check if your shears need sharpening: Run your thumbnail across the blade, gliding it across the blade.
420c will need to be sharpened once every six months!
440c will need to be sharpened once a year!
YOUR SHEARS MUST BE SHARP, PERIOD!
No shears have the ability to sharpen themselves.
Dull blades on shears can cause snagging of the hair, bending/folding, they will also cause the hair to bunch when cutting. Proper care is so important.
Other interesting things to note the names of the shears parts:
Pinkie Tang. Finger Ring, Bumper, Tension Ring & of course the Blades.
Important to remember: The tension needs to be checked after each service! I had no idea
.
Close - Open - Drop
Oil Shears once a week @ the pivot point,
do not let oil run down your blades.
Wipe the pivot point, not your blades.
To select your proper size of shears remember size does matter!
5.5 to 6 are for most people
Tip should not extend over your middle finger.
Also I did not KNOW there are SPECIALITY SHEARS. I have lots to think about now. Next time I attend a Hair Show or decide to purchase shears, I will use these guidelines.
These are a few of the pictures that I took of the shears, 3 rings, slanted finger ring shears, & shears that swivel! A technique I want to learn.
